Background of the study
Nigeria’s diverse religious landscape often results in conflicts driven by differing beliefs and practices. Language plays a critical role in mediating these conflicts by facilitating dialogue, clarifying misconceptions, and fostering mutual understanding. In religious contexts, interpreters and translators work to ensure that sacred texts and sermons are communicated accurately across linguistic divides, thereby reducing potential misunderstandings (Okafor, 2023). Effective use of language in this context requires sensitivity to cultural and religious nuances, which can help bridge divides and promote peaceful coexistence. This study assesses the role of language as a mediator in religious conflicts by analyzing communication strategies used in interfaith dialogues, conflict resolution sessions, and community outreach programs. By exploring case studies and interviewing religious leaders, the research aims to highlight how language can be optimized to defuse tensions and promote reconciliation in a multi-religious society (Eze, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the potential of language to mediate religious conflicts, miscommunication and linguistic ambiguities frequently exacerbate tensions in Nigerian society. Inadequate translation and interpretative practices can distort religious messages, leading to further polarization (Okafor, 2023). This study seeks to identify language-related challenges in conflict mediation and evaluate the effectiveness of current practices, with a view to proposing strategies that enhance intercultural and inter-religious dialogue (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of language in mediating religious conflicts.
  2. To identify linguistic challenges in interfaith communication.
  3. To propose improved mediation strategies.

Research questions:

  1. How does language mediate religious conflicts?
  2. What linguistic challenges contribute to conflict escalation?
  3. What measures can enhance language-mediated mediation?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical role of language in reducing religious conflicts in Nigeria, offering practical recommendations for policymakers and religious leaders to foster dialogue and peace (Okafor, 2023; Eze, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to religious conflict mediation in Nigeria; excludes other types of conflicts.

Definitions of terms:

  • Mediation: The process of facilitating dialogue to resolve disputes.
  • Religious conflicts: Disputes arising from differences in religious beliefs.
  • Linguistic ambiguities: Unclear language that leads to misinterpretation.
